After fighting Luciano Perez I received the news
that my next fight was going to be 8 rounds. I was excited to take the
next step in the boxing world. I was scheduled to fight Gilbert
Venegas, but he got injured in fighting a month before our fight and
had to pull out. That same night, my long time nemesis Jesse Feliciano
surprised the boxing community by beating ex-World Champion Vince
Phillips. The morning after, I got a call by Gary asking me if I wanted
to fight him for a third time. I immediately said yes, because I had
beating this guy twice, except that on one occasion the judges gave him
win. This was the chance to settle the scores.
On fight
night, I walked into the ring confident that I was once again he bigger
and stronger guy. I had seen him fight and I knew he hadn't improved
his skills. For myself, I thought I had grown mentally, physically, and
skillfully. For the first three rounds of the fight I out boxed him and
hit him with every punch that I threw. Also, on the fourth round I was
giving him a boxing clinic, however, mid way through the round my legs
gave out. And had no choice but to bang with him. It seemed he got
stronger and stronger, I felt weaker and tired. There was a moment in
the 6th round when I was leaning on the ropes when I thought "Damn, we
still got three more rounds to go! Is this guy going to stop me?" At
that same moment, the Mexican in me said..."Hell no!" and I reached
deep down and gathered strength from within. From then on, I battled
with all my strength. After 8 rounds, I wasn't pleased with my
performance; however, I knew I had the victory.
The TV
announcer who had me winning on the scorecards said, "what ever the
result is, these boxers need to get medical attention, because this was
one of the most grueling wars we've had in a long time." After a few
moments the verdict was announced and it was declared a draw. After a
third time around, the scores were still tied. In my heart I believe
I've beaten Feliciano every time we've faced each other, but to the
boxing world the scores are still not settled.
